Founded in the Netherlands in 2012 by heart transplant recipient and PLN carrier, Pieter Glijnis, the PLN Foundation was established with a single mission: to find a treatment and ultimately a cure for PLN disease. Since its founding, the organization has helped drive significant advances in research, with multiple potential therapies now progressing through Phase I and Phase II clinical trials led by pharmaceutical companies around the world.

As awareness of PLN disease grew, researchers recognized that many descendants of Dutch immigrants living in the United States and Canada could also be affected. At the same time, several leading North American institutions became actively involved in PLN research. To support these efforts, the Foundation expanded its activities into North America in 2017 through the Netherland America Foundation, which provided 501(c)(3) status for tax-deductible fundraising.

As patient identification, research collaboration, and awareness initiatives continued to grow, the need for an independent North American organization became clear. On June 29, 2020, the IRS officially recognized the North American PLN Foundation as a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with its own Board of Directors and governing statutes. While operating independently, the North American PLN Foundation continues to work closely with its European counterpart to advance research, increase awareness, identify affected families, and accelerate the search for effective treatments.

The North American PLN Foundation is committed to ending this life-threatening genetic heart disease. Because we are a volunteer-run organization, 100% of donations support the Foundation’s mission, including research, awareness, patient discovery, and educational initiatives. Every contribution helps fund critical scientific discoveries, support affected families, and bring us closer to a future free from PLN disease.
